Verborgen mensen

‘Verborgen mensen’ (Loosely translated: Hidden people) arose from the question: ‘what remains of us when we die?’ The body decomposes, memories remain, but these are impalpable and subjective. In this way my attention was drawn to the often quotidian objects the deceased leaves behind. I have noticed that the next of kin keep these objects for a specific reason. They are often bound up with memories of the deceased or there is a story attached that connects the deceased to these objects. In this manner seemingly unimportant, quotidian, objects become emotionally charged. They are transformed from lifeless matter into silent witnesses that bind the deceased to the bereaved.
